Museums tell their own stories via smartphone – and call out with a bell

In Italy, culture and creativity generate every year revenues for about 90 billion euros, that is 6% of national GDP. According to Fondazione Symbola and Unioncamere, we should add satellite businesses, coming to a total turnaround of 250 billion euros, and about 1.5 million jobs.

However, in the last few years, museums, castles and cultural locations struggle to attract investments and started to develop more and more sophisticated marketing and promotion strategies to maintain high visibility against loyal audience, and gradually reach new visitor targets.  

It’s because of marketing, and not only of the relevance of its collections, that the Egyptian Museum in Turin can welcome about 1 million guests every year, cashing 9.5 million euros from admittance tickets and the internal store. Matera, European capital of culture 2019, grew visitors by 170% in the last two years, and Rocca Scaligera in Sirmione, on Garda’s lake, had a peak of 200 thousand euros in tickets during Summer season. 

Lots of museums are using mobile marketing to attract and engage visitors, leveraging GPS features on smartphones to primarily reach who is in the area.
